The smell of old books

Sitting at Sputnik working on a mix for my friend Arthur Alligood. Six songs. I've been behind on work a bit and this has been in the cue for a while so I'm glad to finally get to it. Great songs. Really great songs. It's a joy to work on tunes this good.

Jeremy Casella and his family moved into a new house this morning. Movings are never fun. So much unrest and unsettledness. But it was good to see so many friends all helping out. I've been in Nashville for almost eleven years now, and a lot of these friends I've had for the bulk of that time. They've moved beyond friends and have become family. Sometimes you don't get to see each other for a while, but the bond is there. The love and the trust and the hope for good things for one another. It was good to breathe the fresh air and watch everyone still involved in each other's lives.

On the way back to the studio I stopped at a used books and music store that Todd had given me a gift certificate to for my birthday. I used to love going to used book stores. My small library was my pride and joy back in the single days. The pre-electric guitar days. Walking around today, with that smell in the air that can ONLY be from a room full of old books, seeing the familiar titles, it was a good feeling. I bought a couple of those old books you've always heard of but never read. I'm looking forward to diving in.

This morning felt like a bit of a reconnect with things that I'd lost touch with, the bookstore and the old friends... I feel like there's a fog of tiredness over me, maybe it's the recuperating from the flu and the busy run of shows and studio stuff. It makes me a bit sad because I know I'm not as present for these good things as I'd like to be.

So what did you get, book-wise?

That fog of tiredness is over many, especially me.

I'd also be interested to know what books you bought (being a bibliophile myself). And the fog of tiredness has definitely descended (although I've actually developed an eye-twitch from reading so much. For anyone who wants to know, seminary's a good experience and a wonderful time, but they make you read like it's your job. 500-600 pages a week!) Here's hoping rest comes to you soon, Andy!

old books are amazing...I have some books from the mid 1800's on my bookshelf -I haven't read them yet, but they make me feel smart.

I am dangerous in a used book store... though I sometimes feel guilty about buying books when I have so many already at home that I haven't read yet. A store that sells used CDs, though? Better just keep my wallet for me. No way to not buy something.

Pimp by Iceberg Slim is one of the greatest books ever published. No joke. I would hook that up fo sho.
