daytime quiet

I used to use an alarm clock, but now I just sleep until I hear Ella awake in her crib. We spend the first parts of the day together before I have to head off to wherever I'm working that day and I hand her over to Alison.

I've got clients in my own studio today so all I did was walk downstairs for work. I played guitar (and my newly ebay-ed MicroKorg) all morning.

Usually I eat lunch at one of Nashville's fine and varied local haunts with the crew I'm working with, but today we all had a few errands to run so I struck out on my own.

I got them done quicker than I anticipated and came back home to throw a chicken pot pie in the microwave. (Marie Callendar, you are a special lady...) Ella and Alison were about to take a nap right as I walked in, so I changed a diaper, read a quick story, put Ells in her crib, kissed my wife and sat down.

And it was quiet.

I picked up Alison's laptop, because I'm dumb and I needed to ruin the moment, and read my friend Kierstin's blog. She's probably the most constantly creative person I've ever met, and that's saying a lot, knowing my friends. After reading a number of posts and looking at her photographs, I realized I really needed to put down the computer and enjoy my time alone.

Musicians with toddlers rarely find themselves faced with quiet in the daytime, if at all. It was awesome. I couldn't sleep last night so I stayed up and wrote a couple songs. I'm tired today, but a nap is not in my future.

These few moments are just what I need, though. I picked up Volume One of the Complete Calvin and Hobbes, which my sweet wife gave me on my last birthday, and got lost in their world for about ten minutes.

It's back to work for me, now, but not before I say a quick thanks to the Lord for that little slice of peace.

Heck, do any parents with toddlers often get quiet in the daytime? Not at my house, at least. :-)

Thanks for breaking your quiet to share the thought with us.

quietness is dwelling in the midst of God... its what we all want and what we all need... but its rarely what we attend to.

I cherish those peaceful moments everytime I get them. Thanks for the thoughts.

That is awesome. And I'm convinced that Marie Calendar's Chicken Pot Pies are one of the many graces God gives us in life.

I like how you said "slice of peace", that's awsome! You should use it in your next song if you haven't already. You are a huge fan of my husband's. And, I too now am quite interested. I love that you have a blog too, as do I, please come for a visit there sometime. I hope you don't mind that I added you to my blogroll, too. Catcha L8er. (Oh just so you know I found your blog by visiting my cousin Andrew's blog, there's a link to his in my blogroll too. He has a whole entry on you. So I had to come and visit.)

I totally need one of those Calvin and Hobbes collections! It sounds like a slice of heaven in large hardbound book format. Also, I'm glad you could get a bit of relaxation.
