Just like riding a bicycle...

I hope.

Mid-January, 2010. In 2007 I had almost 200 blog entries. In 2009 I had almost 20. This year I'll aim for something in the middle.

First up, I'm going to try to put together a run of house shows in March and April. A record I was scheduled to produce disappeared and so I've got time to fill and bills to pay. In 2008 I felt a deep calling to leave the road and stay home in 2009. And it was awesome. I plan on staying home much more now, but that feeling of being called to NOT go on the road is no longer there. I'm actually kind of looking forward to playing some shows, then coming home and staying put.

I'll try to do three or four weekend runs, one in the Southeast (Alabama/South Carolina), one Midwest (Illinois/Indiana/Ohio), one Texas/Arkansas and one Northeast (Virginia/Connecticut/??). I'll post more details tomorrow, or maybe just here in a few minutes, but if you see yourself there and think "I'd like to have some folks over to my house/my friend's house/my church/my coffeeshop/etc and have Andy O play some songs, hang out and send him back home with a little dough" then shoot me an email!

Like I said, more on that tomorrow.

Now, for a more traditional blog-type-thing:

Conan. Dude, I love that guy. Watching his last show was hard to do. You see somebody so good at what they do and you watch it get thrown away, it's just sad. Like so many things in this world, you see something great unrecognized and wasted.

Sure, he's not Beethoven or anything, he's just a funny dude who is worth a ton of money, but to see a man handed his dream and then crushed, no matter the circumstances, is and should be painful to watch.

However, that last few minutes with the pseudo-all star band playing "Free Bird"? It was odd, no doubt, and felt like it wasted some precious time, but when Conan, who is NOT a lead guitar player started taking solos, I started crying. Freaking ZZ Top dude looks at this 45-year old gangly redhead who just got publicly humiliated and gives him the nod, the sound guy turns it up and this guy, holding back tears, just goes for it!

No one needs to tell me that playing a guitar solo is a holy moment. Few things in life are more spiritual, more honest or more fun. My perspective on this may not be universal, but just watching this guy miss notes left and right, bad tone, no phrasing, going out in his own bizarre blaze of glory? How can you not love that?

I ask you, America! How can you not love that!?!

I loved it, anyway. Obviously.

And I feel about Conan like I felt about so many bands I loved, who were truly great, and were misunderstood and cast aside for something that would make a company more money. I feel this peculiar sense of longing.

I've been cynical, and he's right, it's a waste of time. I don't want to be cynical. I want to believe that there will come a day when the people who really put themselves out there, exploring their craft and their heart to the best that they can, will be embraced and celebrated. I want to believe there will come a day when we will all "get" the misunderstood genius and all enjoy the catchy pop hook with the same level of holy intentionality.

I saw in the last few nights of that show what I feel when I hear Achtung Baby or A Liturgy, A Legacy. I saw what I felt the last few shows we played as The Normals (not necessarily because we were so great but because of how fully "present" we were in those moments). I saw a glimpse of the divine that is so precious and so true that it reinforces my belief in a Holy God.

Rich meant to show me that. Conan didn't. Who knows what Bono meant. But I saw it nonetheless, and my heart responds:

"I have seen Your creation amid the fallout, and yes, it IS good. Thank you. And come soon."

Choosing Sides Blog Song

Yes, that's right. There's a new project. It's a consolidation of the best songs I put out this year through BriteRevolution.com. I'm pretty thrilled with the songs and the way they turned out, and I hope you will be too! It will eventually be on iTunes and elsewhere, but right now it's only available at shows and the RabbitRoom. CLICK HERE to find the RabbitRoom store.

In other news, we just had our first show of the Andrew Peterson Christmas tour last night and it was fantastic. Today we're in chilly Lincoln, Nebraska. Derek and Sandra are joining us tonight as old school special guests. Should be fun.

I hope that being out on the road will give me a little more time to post, so here's hoping! Thanks for caring and supporting and I hope you like these new songs.

On the Road Again. Ha! Get it? Like Willie Nelson's song!

Remember when I blogged every day? That was a fun time, eh? Well, I think once you've waited over a month between posts you're officially no longer a blogger. Oh well.

I'll say this. Life is not often lived online, and so I'm ok with not blogging as much this year. I have definitely lived more this year, and I'm glad.

Like right now. I'm on the road with Andy Gullahorn and Andrew Peterson driving to Charlotte, NC to play the second of three shows in our world tour. Last night we were in Knoxville, TN and had a great time. We keep talking about how we need to do more of these, and we do. Hopefully next year we can make that happen more.

Speaking of, I am starting to play some solo shows again. Taking this year to be home and off the road has been wonderful, but I'm excited about the idea of taking a weekend or two each month to go and play a handful of select shows and do a few seminars about songwriting and the creative process. If you'd be interested in bringing me to your area, please email Nick at topfivebooking(at)gmail.com and we'll hook it up!

Other than that, I moved into my new studio room this past week. It's a great little room. I have an iso-booth for a singer or guitar player and then some room for writing and a bunch of guitars. It's pretty vibe-less right now, just a room full of gear and blank walls, but the vibe will come soon. It takes time, you know. Got to create that atmosphere that makes it comfortable to open up and reach for greatness.

I'll post some photos next week.

The first project I'm working on there is an EP for Matt Long, which has been super fun. He's a great guy and a really fun songwriter. I'm looking forward to having folks get to hear this project.

So, really quickly, other things going on I'd like you to know about:

I'm playing a full-band rock show in Nashville this Thursday night, Oct 22, at 3rd and Lindsley, 9 PM, $5.

Later this month and early November I'm playing five more shows on guitar with Jars of Clay. We'll be in California, Arizona and New Mexico. You can check my tour dates pages for the specifics.

I'll be on Andrew Peterson's Christmas Tour in December. If you've never seen the show, you need to. It's amazing, and I'm glad to get to be doing it one more year. I'm hoping to have a new collection of songs ready in time for that tour as well. Once I get into making that record I will hopefully be able to devote some of that time to update this here blog.

As for now, I'm going to save this file, shut my laptop, engage in conversation with my friends and post this when I get to the venue.

The Gist of the E-mail

Well, I just sent out my first mailing list email blast in over a year. Lame, I know. Anyway, I thought I'd put the guts of it up here for those who haven't signed up yet. (What are you waiting for?!)

Basically, I told a bit about not working with Caedmon's right now and that I'm pursuing my solo music and production...

----

So what does pursuing my solo music and production mean? It means three things:

1. My new tunes on BriteRevolution.com

2. I'm starting to book solo shows for the Fall. If you're interested in having me in to your school, church, club, coffeehouse, etc... we'd love to hear from you! My good friend/booking guru Nick Flora is mightily helping out with getting me back on the road and you can email him by CLICKING HERE and we can get to work on putting a show together.

3. I've still got some time open through the Fall and Winter in the studio. From full production to guitar sessions to mixing, if you're looking for help with your recording, I'd love to see if there is a way I can be a part. You can reach me best through email or facebook.

So that's about it for me this week. Feel free to say hello on my site, facebook or twitter. Take care and happy Thursday!

----

So that was the gist of the email.  Also, I'm thinking about offering a sort of songwriting seminar to schools and churches to bring me in to play.  Something earlier in the day where I'd talk about the why, the process, the goals of creative writing in general, songs in particular.  What do you think?  Love to know your thoughts on it before I throw it out to promoters.

All right, off to grab fish n' chips with Eric Peters.  See you soon!
