overheard in last night's dressing room

AO: Hey, want to play checkers?

Cason: There aren't enough pieces.

AO: (counting) Yeah, you're right. And I wouldn't have moved my back row anyway.

Cason: Yeah, cause you're a cheater.

AO: It's not cheating. It's strategy.

Cason: Dude, it's the rules. You have to move your back row. Otherwise the other person can never win.

AO: Yeah, they can, if they don't move theirs either. You have to make somebody move their back row. That's the strategy of the game.

Cason: No, dude, it's a rule. You're a cheater.

AO: That makes no sense. How soon do you have to move it? In twenty plays? That's a terrible rule.

Cason: I'm going to look it up. (opens computer, begins google search)

AO: Dude, I'm telling you, it's just strategy. It's called defense. You're playing an offensive game, which is fine. Actually, it's better than fine, it's awesome. Because I always win. Because I play a defensive game.

Cason: I can't find any rules on here, but I know it is one.

AO: Gullahorn! Do you have to move your back row in checkers?

Gullahorn: Hmm? I don't know. I don't think so.

Cason: (mutters) You do.

AO: No, you don't.

Cason: Hey, check out what I just found. Elephants are the only mammals that can't jump.

Don't forget! Tomorrow in Memphis: "Wanted." :-)

Rule 9 on boardgames.about.com states: If a player is able to make a capture, there is no option -- the jump must be made. If more than one capture is available, the player is free to choose whichever he or she prefers.

This seems to be the only way a player would find themselves obligated to move a back row piece-- if its to make a necessary jump.

Everybody loves a know-it-all.

*note to self: never play checkers with Andy...he knows strategies*

I never thought of that checkers strategy before. I'm totally gonna have to try it next time.

And that sounds like the best two-song set ever.

when you come to Charlotte you need to play "When Will I Run" with Derek.

December 2, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterchuck

Sorry, chuck. Derek's not on tour this time around. They've got Bebo instead.

"You guys, are my best friends;
through thick and thin, we've always been together.
We're four of a kind, having fun all day;
palling around and laughing away.
Just best friends, best friends are we."

I need three tickets to the sold out show in Austin. Can anybody help me? *cough*Andy*cough*

December 2, 2007 | Unregistered Commentereiijah

Yeah the Charlotte show is sold out too :-( I though I was gonna be out of town so I didn't get any tickets and now that i'll be here it's too late. This is the first time I'll be in a city near a show and it sells out!

I'm on the waiting list for Charlotte tickets, but it sounded like alot of other people were too, so I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I've certainly never heard that its a rule that you have to move your back row in checkers. Its a strategy I like to use when my family goes to Cracker Barrel (the only time I ever play checkers).

"And that sounds like the best two-song set ever." - Amen to that, Seth. Think you could play those two in Milford, Ohio this weekend?

No matter what, I can hardly wait for this show.

Dude, I'm so bummed. No wonder you didn't play Swing Wide in Dallas because you played it in Houston. Urrrggh! Hold the Light too? Ok, now you will have to play both of those the next time you're in Dallas.

Finding elephant facts from a checkers search? I think that Cason needs to work on his Googling. :)
